There’s certainly no shortage of options out there for folks wanting a little assistance on their bike commute, but if you’re still on the fence, you may want to consider one of OHM Cycles’ new models, which includes the Urban XU450 and XU700 for less adventuresome folks, and the Sport XS700 and XS750 for those that like venture off-road occasionally. Each of those include “silent” BionX motors of various wattage, along with Molicel lithium-ion batteries that OHM says can be fully recharged in about three hours. You’ll also get a “command console” that displays all your vitals, and an integrated security system (complete with an alarm) that promises to keep those lazy bike thieves out there at bay. No word on prices for any of them just yet, but the bikes are apparently making their way to dealers this month, so you should be able to get a quote soon enough.
Tesla Motors sues Fisker over stolen secrets
Tesla Motors can’t seem to keep itself out of the press, can it? The newest flare-up concerns rival Fisker and claims that the automaker has stolen trade secrets and copied design concepts. In a lawsuit filed Monday by Tesla, the carmaker accuses Henrik Fisker — whom the company had hired to design its WhiteStar sedan — of accepting the work to “gain access to confidential design information and trade secrets.” The company alleges that Fisker then used that knowledge to launch a competing vehicle, and believes Fisker has implemented its range-extended vehicle (or REV) technology in the recently introduced Karma. “I think it’s ironic that Fisker chose to name his car the Karma, when what he’s done is very bad karma,” said the company’s lawyer. Fisker wouldn’t comment on the case, then drove silently away when pressed.
Circuit City comes through after trashing man’s Honda Civic
It may have given him the runaround at first, but it looks like Circuit City is now finally doing the right thing after totally trashing the Honda Civic owned by an 8thcivic.com forum user that goes by the name VTECnical. As you may recall, that damage, which totaled over $12,000 in all, was incurred after VTECnical had Circuit City install a Pioneer AVIC Z2 GPS unit and some other components he purchased at the store, all of which went horribly wrong and left the car unsafe to drive. Now according to Autoblog, however, it appears that not only has Circuit City’s insurance provider come through with over $10,000 to cover repair costs, but Circuit City has paid out the remaining amount itself, and thrown in a brand new $2,000 Pioneer AVIC Z2 to boot. No word if VTECnical’s going to have Circuit City install it or not though.
Tesla’s original transmission maker sues for back payment
The drama surrounding the Tesla Roadster’s transmission and the company’s attempts to build a system that can transmit power from the motor to the wheels without breaking under the strain took another strange twist today, with the revelation the that first supplier Tesla contracted to design the part is suing the company for $5.6M. Magna Powertrain USA says Tesla hired it to develop a two-speed transmission in September 2006, and when things fell behind schedule, Tesla canceled the contract and walked away without paying. Saucy! Of course, problems with the proposed two-speed transmission are why Tesla plans to ship early production Roadsters with “temporary” one-speed units and swap them out later, but there’s no word on where the two-speed versions are going to come from apart from Tesla saying “We need to have more control over our fate and manage the process in house.” Sure, sure, just as long as we get one for “testing,” okay?
Cin King vehicles are just slightly ahead of their time
Yeah, Cin King has been tickling people’s fancy for a small while now, but with a lineup consisting of the Slim Jim, Full Power Flagship, Naked Wonder and Circular 360, how could we not pass this along? Barring some sort of miracle, it’s safe to assume that all of these motorcars are patently fake, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a laugh out of such a cleverly designed website meant to showcase the whole family, right? Go on, you know you can’t wait to read more about “the first electric car with diesel drive,” a compact with twin turbines, anything codenamed “Naked Wonder,” and a round-mobile ripped straight out of 2184 (or an obscure episode of The Jetsons). ‘Tis a shame these aren’t anywhere near production — they’d go over so well in America.
GPS over gigantic warning sign, plows into overpass
Okay Britons, here’s your shot at ripping us Americans who’ve had quite a few laughs at the expense of your GPS-loving neighbors. Reportedly, the driver of a charter bus carrying a high school girls’ softball team decided to casually follow the soothing turn-by-turn directions that were being emitted from the nearby GPS unit rather than actually noticing the enormous clearance sign on the overpass ahead. As you can likely guess, the 11-foot, 8-inch-high vehicle plowed right into the 9-foot bridge — which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 — though somehow everyone on board escaped without any major injuries. Oddly enough, the driver apparently isn’t alone in chipping away at the landmark, as a local even mentioned that “large trucks hit the bridge every two weeks or so,” but couldn’t resist noting that “this [instance was] by far the worst.”
Interactive windows dare you to catch a Scion tC RS 4.0
Oh sure, we’ve most certainly seen window-based advertising used to lure the untrained eye to any manner of wares, but Scion’s latest iteration certainly takes interactive promoting to new heights. In order to market its limited edition tC Release Series 4.0, it partnered up with InWindow to cover a series of street-side windows with bubbles which reacted to movements made by captivated individuals walking by. Granted, the installation isn’t nearly as addictive as say, trying to wrangle up every single Pokémon, but it definitely managed to hold the attention of a few geeked-out civilians.
2009 Infiniti FX35, FX50 to include Distance Control Assist
Infiniti has a knack for keeping technophiles grinning, and just as it did with the G35’s in-dash entertainment system, it’s bringing geeks even more automotive improvements to keep our minds off of those skyrocketing gas prices. Reportedly, both the 2009 FX35 and FX50 will be available with all-around cameras (you know, like those found on the EX35), Intelligent Cruise Control and Distance Control Assist. The automaker seems particularly proud of that last one, as it claims to be the first in the industry to offer up the tech. Put simply, DCA will assist drivers in releasing the throttle and applying the brakes as needed in stop-and-go / congested traffic, and (obviously) the system stays activated even after the brakes are tapped. Virtual Wall concept protects pedestrians, livens up crosswalks
Let’s face it — pedestrians are already running amok in major city crosswalks; it’s not like we really need to help them hold up the line of traffic any longer while their light is red, is it? All pent up aggression aside, Hanyoung Lee’s brilliant Virtual Wall concept could certainly assist the non-hardened tourists cross from one side to another without fear of being flattened. Essentially, the light-formed barrier would keep cars and Earthlings separated while individuals are cleared to walk, and while we aren’t sure if bumping into said obstacle would cause tire deflation, engine stall or any other totally tough consequences, we can’t imagine it being too effective (or fun, in a devilish way) otherwise.
VW’s Park Assist Vision helps bridge
Volkswagen is showing off its new Park Assist Vision technology at the Hanover Fair in Germany. Unlike VW’s previous attempts, this version of Park Assist is fully automatic. As such, the driver-turned-spectator can stand outside the car while the Passat maneuvers its way into cramped spots with the help of external cameras and proximity sensors. The driver selects his space on the monitor of the navigation system and then sets the vehicle into “P” mode. It’s just a trial for now so you’ll still have to get by with the ol’ bump-smile-n-flirt approach that’s gotten you and your Aquanet hair into the city up until now.
